Snow in October, can you believe it.  Even though this week will be too cold and wet to paint outside, we still will have some good exterior painting days left.  They will be numbered so you must plan accordingly.

I want to remind you that freezing temperature is the enemy of latex paints and moisture is the enemy of oil base paints.  Diamond Vogel has formulated their Permacryl Latex to perform in cold temperatures (down to 35degrees).   This means the Permacryl will properly perform when applied in temperatures down to 35 degrees if the temperature does not drop below 35 degrees for a  48 hour period of time after application.

I want to continue visiting with you about “mold”.  Last issue I talked about how to get rid of new mold by mixing a 50/50 solution of bleach and water and applying it.  Some of you have painted over mold maybe one or two year ago and now it is growing through the paint.  Before you repaint you must apply a stronger solution of bleach & water (maybe 75 to 25 ratio).  When applying this solution make sure you cover up all plants that are near.  When covering your plants only use a cloth material and never any form of plastic.

It is hard to believe that summer is winding down.  It is still perfect painting weather for exterior painting.  Keep in mind if you have metal siding to be painted, get it done in the next two months or so.  Latex paint on metal siding should have at least 30 days of curing time (not dry time) before we dip into the freezing temperatures that our winters bring us.

.I think you farmers have enough rain by now.  The crops are looking great and now we are ready for sunshine and lake weather.

With all this moisture and humidity, the best way to deal with exterior mold is to spray on  a mixture of bleach and water at about a 50/50 ratio.  Make sure you cover your plants near where you are applying the bleach.  Do not scrub the surface once you have applied the bleach.  Just leave it alone so it can work its way in.  Rinse with clear water about thirty minutes after application.

Spring is just around the corner and we are all anxious to get outside to paint. 

Now is the wrong time to be painting any latex products outside.  Even though we had one or two days in the upper 60’s, your latex paint will not last these freezing nights; especially the ones we have lately in the teens.  Latex paint needs a curing time of at least 30 days of nonfreezing temperatures after it has been applied.  (I know some docks are going in, but please don’t paint them yet)

With our eagerness for spring, you can bring us all your storm windows and screens that need repaired.  We repair and rebuild all types of wooden storm windows and patio screens.

On a warmer note, our 29the Annual Hog Roast is Saturday, May 23.  Mark this on your calendar.  It is “free and delicious”.  Free, because you have paid for it somewhere over the years and delicious because Forbes Meat Market cooks it for us.

Something to be aware of when you are doing your own painting is to use the proper brush,roller or roller sleeve.The width of your brush, the use of a roller handle in your roller and the thickness of the knap of your roller sleeve can make a big difference in the out come of your job.
