when you are doing your touch up and detail painting you must realize that you get a different look with each way you apply your paint. It is called angular sheen. A brush will give you one look, a roller another and spraying still another. Another variation of your angular sheen look will be thickness of roller sleeves.

Summer is definately here. We have had some very timely rains for the farmers and the weekends have been great for the lake lovers. We are settling into our new location. I want to thank you for your effort to find us and your continued support.

I want to touch on two areas this week: graffiti and the painting of metal buildings. We have graffiti remover in a spray can called "Goof Off" that works well for the removal of marks. You need to read the instructions carefully.

If you have a metal building that you want to paint there is more to it then just applying the paint. That will be the easiest part of the job. What a Fourth of July celebration in the Iowa Great Lakes. Everything was jus perrfect and summer has surely arrived. This is the perfect time of year to be outside painting!

     Before you apply your paint, make sure that the surface (substrate) you are painting is prepared properly. Some scraping, sanding, caulking, and definately cleaning should be done before you dip your brush into the paint bucket. Last week I was summoned to court as a character witness for a painter.  After I testified, I stayed and listened for about an hour or so.  The irony of it all is that painting skills were not the issue.  All issues dealt with lack of communication and the inability to establish an understanding of the customers expectation and the painters scope of the work at an established price. I couldn’t help but think that both parties were in error.

When you hire a painter, be it through a general contractor, a decorator or direct, make sure you have communicated all aspects of your expectations.  The price of the paint job is important, but of more importance is your satisfaction with the completed job.You as the customer need to have done your homework before you hire the painter.  Know what color and sheen you want and where you want it.  Sometimes you may need the help of a decorator or a competent retail paint person.  The more dialog you can develop with your painter, the less likely you will end up in court.

Wow, it is Winter Games time in Okoboji.  Due to the ice conditions, we are moving broomball and softball off the lake again this year.  Softball will be in Milford and broomball will be just north of our store on the empty lot of the new Okoboji Harley Davidson dealership.  Please keep your car off the ice this weekend.

I want to continue my information about the current trend in colors.  Deeper and darker colors are made in neutral and deep base paint. The beautiful red colors will definitely require multiple coats.  There is minimal titanium dioxide (white-which gives hide ability) in the base to create the depth of color.  This means that it could take up to four (depending upon the sheen) to get that quality finished look.  Plan on your dark colors to have multiple applications.
